Car Seat Stages: Know What Your Child Needs
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Texas law require children to ride in an appropriate car seat. Here’s a breakdown of the four stages.
Rear-Facing Infant
All infants should ride rear-facing as long as possible. Infant seats include a detachable carrier with a base, making it easy to move a sleeping baby. The AAP recommends rear-facing until at least age 2.
Shop infant seats โConvertible
Convertible seats transition from rear-facing for babies to forward-facing with a harness. The most versatile option โ can keep children rear-facing longer. Great for travel since one seat covers multiple stages.
Shop convertible seats โForward-Facing Harness
Once your child outgrows rear-facing, a forward-facing seat with a 5-point harness is next. Keep children harnessed as long as possible before moving to a booster. Texas law requires car seats for children under 8.
Shop forward-facing seats โBooster Seat
Boosters raise your child so the seat belt fits properly. Choose high-back for side-impact protection or backless for portability. Children must pass the 5-step seat belt fit test before going without.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. Essential facts, Texas laws, and resources to help you choose and install the right car seat.
๐ก๏ธ Key Safety Facts
Rear-facing is safest. The AAP recommends rear-facing until your child reaches the max height or weight limit โ often to age 4 or beyond.
Car seats expire. Most have a 6โ10 year lifespan. All Baby1stRental seats are within their expiration dates and regularly inspected.
Proper installation is critical. NHTSA estimates 46% of car seats are installed incorrectly. Use LATCH or seat belt โ not both โ and check for less than 1 inch of movement.
Harness snugness test. Try to pinch the harness at the shoulder. If you can pinch a fold, it’s too loose.
No bulky coats. Remove puffy coats before buckling โ they prevent snug harness fit.
